A welfare system that ensures people have an adequate income and standard of living, are treated with and can live in dignity and are able to participate meaningfully in their communities.
The New Zealand Government has a vision for New Zealand’s welfare system. They have asked a group of experts called the Welfare Expert Advisory Group (WEAG) to advise them on the future of our welfare system. They want to ensure that it is accessible and fair for all New Zealanders.
The WEAG will provide advice to the Government on options that could best give effect to this ambition.
Our welfare system is large and complex and has a big impact on the lives of lots of people with very limited resources. There are inequities that need to be addressed in ways that will treat people more fairly and also encourage them to be earning, learning, caring and volunteering, thereby ensuring a better future for all New Zealanders.
